How many bathrooms? What's the square footage? Does it have a staircase that will be hard for some of your family members to navigate? What will your new commute to work be like? It is absolutely critical to be honest with yourself about whether or not the home will provide you with the bare essentials that you need.

Once you've determined that the home meets all of your basic requirements, you can start to explore all of the added features it offers. Does it have vaulted ceilings? A jetted tub? A wet bar downstairs? Tile showers? Accent lighting? These added features are great - not only do they increase your enjoyment of the home, they will also add value to your home in the event that you decide to sell it down the road.
Your Lifestyle
One of the biggest factors that determines whether or not a home will be right for you actually has nothing to do with the home at all - it has to do with your and your family's lifestyle. Before you can know if a home will meet your needs, you have to know what those needs are. If you will rarely be home during the daylight hours, for example, you probably don't need to spend the extra money on the home with the outstanding view of the mountains. If your children are already grown and out of the house, you may not need the house with 3,500+ square feet. Once you are honest with yourself about what your needs are, you will be able to find a home that meets them.
