7 Things You Should Do Immediately After Buying Your New Home
Make your wish list, get prequalied, organize your household budget... People are always talking about what you should do when you're preparing to buy a house in Colorado Springs, but what about what you should do after you have signed your name on the dotted line? What are some of the first steps you should take as a proud new homeowner? The MacGuire Team is here to answer your questions.
7 Things You Should Do Immediately After Buying Your New Home
1. Inspect Your Home Thoroughly
When you're buying a house in Colorado Springs, it's easy to get so swept up in the excitement of it all that you forget to notice the little details. Once the home is officially yours, give it a thorough inspection to make sure everything is as it should be. Should you need to contact the sellers, you'll want to do so sooner than later.
2. Deep Clean BEFORE Moving All Your Stuff In
If at all possible, we highly recommend thoroughly cleaning your new home before moving all of your belongings in. Cleaning without having to work around furniture and boxes is MUCH easier, and it will be a great way to give yourself a fresh start in your new home.
3. Transfer The Utilities To Your Name
Some utility companies may need a signature or other form of confirmation from the seller in order to switch the utilities over to your name, so it's important to do this as soon as you can. Sellers tend to lose interest in the property very quickly after closing!
4. Change The Locks
You were handed the keys to your new house in Colorado Springs at closing, but were you handed the only keys? You can never know what other copies are floating around out there and who might have access to one. Keep your family safe by getting the locks changed as soon as you move in.
5. Check Your Attic Insulation
According to Green Home Gnome, 25% of all your household heat escapes through the attic. Since we're prone to especially cold winters in Colorado Springs, it's important to make sure your attic is properly insulated. You don't need an unnecessarily high energy bill!
6. Update Your Will
It may seem like real estate and estate planning should be two entirely separate issues, but this is not the case. A home in Colorado Springs is a valuable financial asset; it's important to make arrangements for what will happen to the property if something should happen to you.
7. Replace The Air Filter In The HVAC System
In order you HVAC system running efficiently, you should replace the air filter every two or three months. The home's previous owners probably had a lot on their plate, though, and it's possible that this simple task got pushed to the back burner. It's worth going ahead and replacing the filter after you move in.
