This Beautiful home was designed by famous architect Walter S. White who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright. Mr. White received several awards for using steel in his designs. He was also very interested in solar energy and developed pivotal windows capable of heat exchange. Another White signature is the use of the Hyperbolic-Paraboloid Roof System. These three signature items have been combined in the design of Ventanas as this home has been so appropriately named. As you explore this architecturally interesting home you will find many features no other home in Colorado Springs can offer or match. The present owners renovated this 7200 square foot home in 2006. Their sensitivity to the design and their desire to use only the best quality in materials and craftsmanship is displayed everywhere. The house is constructed of steel beams, anchored in concrete. The roof is carried only by steel beams; there are no supporting interior walls on the upper level. The house is part of a circle with an 85-foot radius. To find the best position, Mr. White used a small model at the center point, rotating it daily until he found the position that satisfied his quest for capturing the best attributes he wanted: light, sun, and views. The ten-acre property is gated. The specially designed red gate can be opened by remote control or by telephone when a visitor uses the call box. There is a three-car garage that is closed by three overhead doors operated by remote controlled units. Two garage doors are also outfitted with a numeric box on the outside and can be operated using a personal code. There is a fourth garage door in the center of the back wall that is opened manually. It allows access to the large patio and is intended for moving furniture to the lower level of the home or catering service for big parties.

Motion detectors are installed all around the perimeter of the home and activate exterior lights. There are six zones and small lights by the master bed will illuminate indicating which motion detector has been triggered. As one approaches the house by car or on foot, a motion detector will switch on the lights by the garage, the parking space, and the lights leading up the stairs to the front door.Because the growing season is relatively short at this 7,500 foot altitude, the owners opted to install a sculpture garden. The grounds were stair stepped around the house using blocked walls and the earth was covered with white marble chips. Cement platforms were poured at several locations to accommodate sculptures. More hardscape was put into place to create solid walks and steps around the home and lead to a Japanese-style summer house or teahouse and a regulation tennis court.

The teahouse offers many possibilities and it will allow the new owner to be creative. The present owners are using it as an artist studio. However, with its all around sliding glass doors and walk-around terrace it is a great viewing area of the tennis court below. In addition, the existing chimney and exhaust vent would make it easy to place a gas fireplace in the center of the building to extend its seasonal use.About two acres of the property are chain-linked fenced keeping larger wildlife away from the house. Double gates on either side of the fenced area allow big equipment to access all ten acres. A smaller yellow gate leads from the backyard to a large putting green and sandtrap. Stairs lead up to the main entry. An etched glass door separates the foyer from the hallway that leads into the living room. There are three ten feet wide tripple glass picture windows, one in the foyer, two in the hallway, that offer beautiful views of the sculpture garden, rose bushes, and putting green.

As one walks into the living room views of majestic Pikes Peak and surrounding mountains unfold. The outside perimeter of the house is all glass. Ingenuously designed by the architect, this wall of windows does not only provide gorgeous views, but also heats the home in the winter and fends off the heat of summer rays. Every Spring and Fall these windows are pivoted around their vertical axis to either position the special solar glass panes toward the inside or out. The window wall extends into the master bedroom and master bath, located to the left of the living room and the dining room to its right. The dining and living room are divided by a wooden sliding screen consisting of ten carved panels. Another nine panels are installed in the dining room, separating it from the kitchen. These nineteen pecan wood panels were rescued from the Frank Lloyd Wright Geneva Inn in Wisconsin before it was demolished. They were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and are a real treasure.

Because the roof is a Hyperbolic-Paraboloid design, it is carried by steel beams only. There are no weight bearing walls and no walls go up to the ceiling. Thus the entire ceiling stretches across all rooms of the upper floor. The ceiling is lined by 2 x 6 inch cut wood strips, set on their two-inch side and fastened in tongue and groove fashion. Because the roof is curved, these wood parts were milled to a three degree angle to follow that roof line. An incredible accomplishment of craftsmanship that could not be repeated in today’s economic market. The steel beams that carry the roof are clad in mahogany. They are supported by concrete columns that are covered by white bricks. All interior walls are only 84 inches tall. They are birch wood and capped by 8 x 8 inch mahogany beams that house fluorescent lights directed upwards giving the wooden ceiling at night a warm glow. There is a large fireplace, fueled by gas, in the living room. It is surrounded by the same white brick as the steel bearing columns and accented by an Absolute Black granite hearth. The living room is large enough to accommodate two seating areas for eight people each. One is facing the magnificent views, the other is by the fireplace where a large TV can be placed behind doors in the built-in wooden birch cabinet.

Charcoal grey 18 x18 inch flagstone tiles cover the entire floor area of both stories emphasizing the open floor plan design of the upper and lower levels. And a built-in vacuum system on both floors allows for easy clean up. Exotic stones have been used on all surfaces throughout, such as Palladio granite in the kitchen, Red Onyx in the powder room, Red Dragon in the wet bar and a rare white Quartz in the laundry room. Speaking of the laundry room; it is located next to the kitchen, has an electric Miele stainless steel washer and a Miele stainless steel gas dryer. The laundry room door opens to the wrap around terrace and an outdoor eating area with an oversized Viking Pro stainless gas grill and rotisserie.

The kitchen features state-of the-art appliances. A Wolf induction cooktop is paired with an electric grill and a gas burner that can be changed to accommodate a large wok. The 36-inch wide electric Gaggenau oven, equipped with rotisserie, baking stone, and temperature probe, convection, broiler, conventional baking, and self-cleaning modes, will please any cook. And then there is the Gaggenau electric steam cooker that handles any task from cooking pasta, steaming vegetables, reheating foods or keeping meals hot until ready to be served. The Miele warming oven, Miele dishwasher, Sub-Zero 36-inch wide individual freezer and refrigerator, large Sub-Zero wine cabinet with a 136-bottle capacity, compactor, microwave oven, stainless steel double sink and a separate prep sink complete this dream kitchen. All appliances are built into imported cabinets with matte black and high gloss red lacquer finish that compliment the Birch wood walls. The fireplace is completely clad in Absolute Black granite. A built-in large desk, ethernet wired for computer work, set into a large picture window niche, allows the cook to multi-task. The casual dining area in front of the gas-fueled fireplace can accommodate a 60 x 60 inch table that will seat eight. The dining room next to the kitchen is spacious enough to hold a dining table for ten to twelve guests below a Murano glass chandelier.

The master bedroom at the opposite side of the living room has a huge glass encased terrace that offers the most spectacular views of Colorado Springs’ city lights below. A large black marble fireplace wall with hearth creates a focal point in this spacious room. There are loudspeakers by the bedside that can be connected to a TV set and can be shut off individually at each side. The built-in intercom system with radio and CD player is controlled from this room. Another nice feature is one of the three weather station monitors that can be viewed from the bed. The other two are located in the kitchen and the media room. In keeping with the open floor plan, the master bath connects to the bedroom without doors. Because of the Birch wood walls the bath with dressing table, double sinks, Black Forest granite counters blend beautifully with the entire space. There is a walk-in closet, accessory closet, and a separate room with toilet and bidet. The open shower faces the terrace. It’s backdrop is a slate wall created from slabs that match the flooring.

An open steel staircase with slate steps leads to the lower floor. A ten-foot long glass light fixture hangs from the second floor ceiling and appears to drop to the bottom of the first floor. A red glass splash below the light underlines this impression. This light was custom made and imported from Italy. The additional bedrooms are located downstairs and face Pikes Peak. Their large windows provide beautiful views on this floor as well. Solar shades are installed on all windows on the first floor and on those in the kitchen and hallway. The present owners are using the two rooms closest to the staircase as guest bedrooms. The larger of the two has its own terrace and a spacious closet. Both rooms share a bathroom with two sinks and shower. In addition there is a powder room and a separate laundry room.

A large built-in custom bookshelf and seating area create a library and reading room that also houses a computer station and writing table available to the guests. The bookshelves connect to a cabinet with black glass doors. It houses an audio system that is wired to ceiling speakers installed throughout the home and the outside. In the library is a large cedar closet behind a hidden door that doubles as safe room. The library flows into the media room and a custom wet bar equipped with refrigerator, wine cooler, compactor, dishwasher, and microwave oven. The uniquely designed bar top made of Red Dragon granite with Platner edge can accommodate six to eight people. The wet bar is part of the media room that features a huge gas-fueled fireplace with an Absolute Black granite hearth. Leucos light gems provide intimate lighting for the bar. A door by the bar leads to a spacious patio with a gas-fueled fire pit. The patio connects by a spiral staircase to the upper terrace that wraps the entire glass walled side of the home. This is perfect for small and large parties.

From the media room you can enter the third bedroom that features also a large fireplace, again gas-fueled. This bedroom has a door to the outside patio and another one to the back hallway and back staircase that connects with the main foyer and the master bedroom. The companion bathroom with built-in dresser, mahogany cabinets, lighted vanities, a granite shower and large walk-in closet, is very beautiful. The back hallway has a door to the parking lot and another one to the three-car garage with storage cabinets and a walk-in closet that can be locked.A good size exercise room with skylight, a custom sauna, and adjoining shower are located next to the back staircase. A built-in stepped closet wall separates the backdoor hall or mud room from the exercise room and provides storage for coats and shoes. On the backside the closet reverses to house a TV and other audio systems for the athlete. The ceiling of the exercise room and back hallway is completely covered by Aspen wood and has multiple recessed light fixtures.

The upper floor is serviced by three propane heaters and three air conditioners. The three zones cover 1. Kitchen 2. Dining and Living Room 3. Master Bedroom and Master Bath. A hot water boiler heats the lower floor. Each room has a thermostat so the temperatures can be regulated as needed. A house to be proud to own and love!
