5 Tips for Being a Good Neighbor

Colorado Springs is a wonderful place to live, filled with friendly people and awesome communities. If you are new to the area, we hope you and your neighbors take some time to meet each other. Of course, in many cases, people will slip into a new neighborhood, and next thing you know it's been five years and you still don't know the people around you. Each day is an opportunity to get out and meet your new and old neighbors alike. Here are a few tips you can utilize, whether you're new to the area, or you've been here a while and want to welcome the newcomers to your Colorado Springs community.

Get to Know Your Neighbors
If someone new has moved into your community, you can really make an impact on them by going over and introducing yourself. If you want to bake cookies and bring them with you, it can add an old fashioned flair - and everyone loves cookies! Ask them how the move is going, see if they need any help with something. Maybe you'll have supplies that they need to get something finished.

If you've just moved into a new neighborhood, don't be shy. Introduce yourself to the families around you. A good idea is to meet the families across the street, on either side of you, and behind you.

Maintain Your Space
Be a friendly neighbor by not only finishing proper maintenance on your home and landscape but keeping your area clean. Keep the toys cleaned up out of the front yard, and don't forget to shut the garage door. Not only is this great for safety purposes, but generally your neighbors don't want to see your packed garage. Another thing you may not have considered is your landscape lights. When installing them, be aware of their positioning and make sure that they aren't pointed directly in your neighbor's bedroom window.

Don't Be Too Noisy
Not only do you want to keep the music down, but if you have parties, help keep those events quiet too. No one likes to be on the receiving end of a loud gathering on a night when they really need to get their sleep. Just remember to be considerate of your noise level. Do you have pets? If they like to bark a lot through the day while you're gone at work, or even through the night, be aware of it, and work to change their behaviors. It can be very challenging to be on the receiving end of a barking dog, and many neighbors don't want to confront anyone about it - but it is something to be aware of.

Be On the Lookout
Everyone loves when there is an extra pair of eyes on their home. If you notice strange activity during the day while they're normally gone, don't hesitate to send them a text and ask them. If it's really suspicious you can also call the authorities as well. If your neighbors have mentioned that they're going on vacation, you can help them by keeping an eye on their property. If there's been a big storm, you can take a look around and make sure that everything looks okay and no tree branches have caused any damage. No one likes a nosy neighbor, but it is helpful to know that your neighbors have your back!

Communicate
If a situation does arrive between you and a neighbor, handle it quickly and appropriately. Do communicate with them in person about the issue, while continuing to be friendly and kind. DON'T leave a hateful letter on their car windshield or taped to their front door. This can create a hostile environment, and if you plan on living there for a while, you probably want to have a good relationship with the people around you.
