5 Tips for Home Safety During Holiday Travel

Unless you would like to reenact a scene from Home Alone, we can imagine that you would like to know your home is safe while you're away. With Thanksgiving only a few days away, many people will be traveling to visit family and friends. This leaves your home unattended, and possibly at risk for intruders if you don't take a few necessary precautions. The Mike MacGuire team not only wants to help you find your dream home, but keep it safe for the remainder of the time you'll be living in it.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind before locking up your house and heading out for the weekend.

Hire a House Sitter
When you have someone coming and going from your home, it will make it look a lot less appealing to intruders. Whether you find a house sitter, dog sitter, or even someone to check in and mow the grass, this will help make your home look like you're still around. You can even talk with your neighbors to see if they can keep an eye on your home while you're away.

Hold Your Mail
There's one thing that can make it blaringly obvious that you're not at home, and that is a full mailbox. Before you leave on your trip, call the post office and have them hold your mail for the duration of the vacation. Or you can have a neighbor or friend drop by and grab the mail.

Don't Broadcast the Details of Your Trip
You don't have to keep your travels a complete secret, but it wouldn't be a good idea to talk about them on your blog or even your social media. You never truly know who is watching, looking, or logged in, so it's best to keep the details on the low down.

Check the Electronics
Before you walk out of the house and lock the door, check the electronics and unplug them. If you do this, it will make it easier to remember the curling iron you may have left on, and it can give you peace of mind. Also remember to not leave your GPS in your vehicle at the airport. This can tell a potential intruder that you aren't home, and give them directions to your drive way.

Look Into a Security System
Finally, one of the best ways to get peace of mind about leaving your home unattended is to have a security system installed. There are many types available, and some even allow you to see your home through cameras in the driveway.
