Purging Your Home for the New Year

Whether you've lived in your home for one year or fifty years, it's easy to accumulate stuff that you probably don't want to hang on to anymore. Even if you aren't planning on moving in the near future, if can make a huge difference in the feel of your home to go through and purge yourself of the items you didn't need to hang on to. If you're moving, it's especially important to take care of the clutter, not just because it makes moving easier, but it can make selling easier as well. Here are a few tips to help make purging your home easier - and know what is good to get rid of.

Bedrooms
If you walk into your bedroom (or your kids) and are constantly bombarded with clothes on the floor, thrown over the chairs, or dresser drawers not closing - it could be a sign that you need to reprioritize your room. Take time to weed out clothes that are outgrown or outdated. This also includes shoes, hats, and accessories. If you have clothes that are torn, either repair them or remove them.

Bathrooms
It can be easy to collect items in this room that are old and expired. Check the dates on your makeup and sunscreen and get rid of items that are expired. If you have old bath toys that you don't need but are still in good condition, you can give them away! Get rid of ripped towels, old bath mats, empty bottles that accumulate, and even old hair ties, bows, and brushes.

Toy Room
Maybe you don't want to go through this room because it's sentimental, maybe it's because the idea of decluttering the room with all of the clutter is too much to bear. Either way, it's time to tackle the room and start the new year off right! Outgrown toys and incomplete games are the first to go. If you have furniture that's been outgrown or costumes, those can take up space in someone else's home. If you still have too many toys, take some time to organize and rotate them through the year.

Kitchen
The kitchen is commonly one of the most used rooms in a home, and it can obviously become a space where the most clutter can accumulate. Do you have Tupperware that doesn't have lids or the other way around? Clean out your cabinets and enjoy all of the newfound space! Cracked plates, glasses, and other glass items are only a hazard waiting to happen. Be honest, you probably aren't going to use the expired food and stale items in your pantry and refrigerator - save yourself some space and get rid of them. Do you have unused appliances? Donate them to a good cause, or add them to a pile for a garage sale. Finally, if you have a pile of cookbooks that you no longer refer to, it's time to free up space and make room for something you do use.

Office
Go through your drawers and shelves. Weed out the old documents that need to be shredded. Get rid of old keys and dried out pens. Old cords and adapters also take up unnecessary space in your office real estate.

Garage

Broken equipment, dirty rags, even expired chemicals are all items that you'll probably find laying around your garage. Gather up the trash that may be lying around like old paint cans, empty boxes and even broken tools to get rid of. If you have unwanted holiday decorations that you didn't put away, donate them so they aren't still sitting there this time next year.
