Things to Do For Your Home In January

January is almost over, but you still have time this weekend to get a few things checked off of your January Maintenance checklist. Winter brings a special type of circumstances, especially when you live in Colorado Springs. You have sunny days, snow days, nice days and cold days. It fluctuates, but you are still left with a winter that you need to prepare your home for, and a list of tasks that need to be accomplished. Here is a short list of things you can knock out this weekend to keep you home well cared for.

Change the Furnace Filters

Changing out your furnace filters is a great way to keep your furnace in great working order, while also maintaining great air in your home. There are ways you can help remember to accomplish this task, and one more popular and new way is to have your filters mailed to you on a regular basis. You’ll always get it on time, and when you need it next.

Test Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors

Winter is just as important as any to make sure that your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working properly. Test them this weekend, make sure the batteries are working if there are any, and replace any that aren’t.

Regularly Check for Ice Dams and Icicles

Ice on your roof can be a huge problem when it starts to cause ice dams, and icicles can be pretty, but also extremely heavy on your gutter system. You can help keep these from forming by using a long handled broom to sweep snow from your roof. If you get them often, you may want to have a roof inspector come take a look because there could be something more serious happening.

Tighten any Handles, Knobs, Racks, etc.

Check the handles, knobs and racks in your home. You know what we’re talking about, that bathroom handle that jiggles a little when you open it. Every single time you think to yourself that you need to fix that, but it gets put on the back burner and then you never get it taken care of. Take 5 minutes to walk through the house and tighten everything - you’ll be glad you did.

Check and Clean Range Hood Fan

This part of your kitchen can be easily forgotten, but can also accumulate some of the most dirt and grease. Take some time (and a lot of elbow grease) to clean your range and check the hood fan.

Deep Clean and Inspect Basement

While this may not be and easy task, winter months are a great time to get down there and really give your basement the attention that it needs. Organizing and clearing the clutter can not only make you feel better, but it can make it easier when you need to find something or if you move in the future to pack it up.

Vacuum Refrigerator Coils

Have you ever thought about cleaning these? They are definitely out of sight, out of mind, but still need to be cared for. Pull out the manual for you fridge, or check the internet to learn how to properly clean them on your unit.

Run Water and Flush Toilets in Unused Spaces

If you have guest bathrooms that don’t get used on a regular basis, now is a great time to run some water down the sinks and flush the toilets. It’s a great way to make sure that the water is working, nothing is frozen, and no leaks have sprung up.

Check Water Softener and Add Salt if Needed

Do you have a water softening system? You need to check the salt levels on a regular basis to make sure that they aren’t getting too low. You’ll notice a decline in the quality of your water when the softener salt does run out, so catch it early and fill it up.

Clean Garbage Disposal

Finally, don’t forget about you garbage disposal! Every month you’ll want to clean it out, and it only takes a few minutes. Pour some ice down it, a little baking soda, and a few lemon or lime rinds to help get it sparkling clean.

Your Home To-Do List

You may have a long to-do list, but your home is just as important as the rest. If you ever want to sell your home, it can be easier to prepare it for listing if you have kept up on the little maintenance tasks. If you don’t, you could have a lot of little things, or even a few large things looming over you as you prepare to list. Take a few minutes this weekend to run down the list and clear your mind of these little home maintenance tasks.
