5 Spring Home Maintenance Tips

Spring has sprung! Before your relax into the warmer weather, remember that the rising temperatures mean it's time to tackle several home maintenance projects. Cold temperatures and heavy snowfall can be hard on homes, so now it's time to pay a little extra attention to your houses and make sure everything is still in good working order for spring. As you organize your maintenance schedule for your Colorado Springs homes, here are a few suggestions to keep in mind.

1. Gutters and Downspouts
If your gutters and/or downspouts are full of debris, water will not be able to flow through them properly and it can end up pooling near the foundation of your home or in other unwanted areas. Remove all the debris from your gutters and check them for leaks; if water is flowing through spaces it shouldn't, fill the cracks with caulk.

2. Roofs
After months of heavy snowfall, it's important to check your roof for damage. If you don't fix the small problem areas now, they could turn into big problems when your roof starts leaking during spring's rainstorms. Do yourself a favor and repair any minor issues now.

3. Siding
It's time to break out the power washers! Thoroughly wash the exterior walls of your home to prevent mold or mildew growth. Not only will this help your house look much better - it will also reduce allergic reactions for everyone who lives in (and visits) your home. Be careful not to use extremely high water pressure, though, because it can damage your home.

4. Windows and Doors
Fluctuating temperatures cause materials to expand and contract. From a homeowner's perspective, it can potentially cause the caulk sealant around your doors and windows to shrink away from the frame. If you notice this happening, apply fresh caulk around your doors and windows.

5. Gardens and Flower Beds
Before you're ready to begin planting, it's time to prep your gardens and flower beds. Cut back any tall grasses and weed out all the unwanted plants and other debris. Add fresh dirt as needed so your gardens will be ready for the new plants and the returning perennials.
