Protecting Your Home From Water Damage

July 29th is Rain Day - and if you've looked at the forecast, right now they're predicting a week's worth of potential thunderstorms. While your home may not be at risk of water damage from the rain (though, it's completely possible), sometimes your home needs protection from issues within. Water damage is a very real issue and one that no homeowner wants to deal with, so here are a few things to keep in mind as you protect your home.

Check the Roof

One of the biggest issues a homeowner can run into is roof issues. Whether it has major issues or just small leaks - both can cause severe water damage in your home. Whether you're buying a new home in Colorado Springs, or you are maintaining your current home - it's always a good idea to have your roof inspected. Especially if you suspect that there may already be some issues. Inspecting and repairing your roof can also be a great investment that you can reap the rewards of when you sell a Colorado Springs home.

Take Inventory

While you don't want to assume that your home will flood - you will never regret preparing for it. One of the biggest ways you can is by documenting everything that you own. You can either go room by room, and document everything as you go, or start with the largest items first. Electronics, furniture sets, collections, and even your wardrobe can be great places to start. This may seem like a large endeavor, but whether your home is flooded or gets robbed - you'll be glad you had a list to prove what you owned.

Clean Your Gutters

When it rains a lot, your gutters and downspouts can often be the first things to suffer - this is also what causes a lot of water damage. Are your gutters filled with leaves? Do they have leaks or holes? this can cause water to go where you don't want it to, which can then create water damage in areas around your home.

Guard Your Foundations & Basement

The foundation of your home is one of the most important areas of your home. Your entire home sits on the foundation, and if it is damaged, your home will suffer the consequences. The ground around your home should slope several inches down away from your foundation to help keep water from pooling around the foundation. If you have a basement, you should consider adding a sump pump (if you don't have one already) to help remove water quickly if it does accumulate.
