Your September House Maintenance Checklist

It’s hard to believe that fall is just around the corner and after that comes winter! Before we get ahead of ourselves though, there are a few things you’ll want to do around your Colorado Springs House this month to make sure that routine tasks are performed and that your home is ready for the new season. Take a look and see what you can add to your “honey do list” this month!

Inspect Roofing for Missing, Loose Or Damaged Shingles

Summer storms can do quite a number on your roofing, now is a great time to get up there and take a look! If you notice anything out of the ordinary, you may want to have an inspection done just to double check. Most roofing companies offer free inspections, so you can give them a call and just let them take a look.

Power-Wash Windows and Siding

Summer rain can cause you siding and windows to get a lot of backsplash, making them dirty. Now is a great time to pull out the power washer and get them cleaned up! If you notice loose siding pieces, you’ll want to get them fixed before spraying the water on them, though.

Flush Hot Water heater and Remove Sediment

Every so often, you’ll want to flush out your hot water heater for sediment. You’ll want to do this even more often if you have hard water - especially because a lot of water softeners are installed after the water heater so it gets the hard water first. If you don’t know how to clean it out, hire a specialist.

Winterize Air Conditioning System

Now that the air is cooling off, it’s time to consider having your AC unit winterized and get it ready to survive the cold weather. You can do this yourself or you can schedule a time for your AC tech to come out and take a look. Even if you hire someone to come out and do it, you can still rake the leaves and branches away from the unit to create a clear path for the tech.

Get Heater System Ready for Winter

It’s time to schedule an inspection with your local heating company. The benefits of having it inspected before winter far outweigh NOT having it looked at. It can help lower heating costs, create a higher quality of comfort, create less of a risk of breakdowns, and help provide longer service from your furnace!

Check Weather Stripping on Doors and Windows

Windows and doors can provide a HUGE cold draft in the window, so you’ll want to make sure the seal is working before the cold winter winds hit. You can save a lot of money on heating costs when you take a few minutes to check the seals.

Apply Fertilizer to Lawn

Fall is the perfect time to fertilize your lawn! If you want to keep it green a little longer through the fall, as well as give it the best chance of survival through the cold winter months, you’ll take some time to apply a quality fertilizer to your landscape.

Clean Garbage Disposal

This is a routine chore that needs to be done once a month. This can help the overall cleanliness of your kitchen, as well as reduce your risks of a fruit fly invasion. You can easily clean it by filling it with a few lemon rinds, baking soda, and ice. Turn it on and let it clean itself!

Test Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors

Every month you’ll want to test your smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly. This could be a life-saving check, so while it may seem mundane, or easy to skip every once in a while, a few minutes could be invaluable to check them.
